This studio was led by HDR, Omaha based architecture firm, and it marks a pivotal time in the evolution of my thinking and my approach to architecture. This project is important to me because it was not necessarily about the outcomes, but more about the process of discovery that the studio undertook to create compelling projects. This project started with using science-fiction novels as a way to discover a topic and then, for me, evolved into a social commentary with the goal of representing issues of wealth, gentrification, and housing inequality with different forms of collage, text, and models. The studio culminated with a First Friday Omaha installation led by Omaha by Design, an Omaha based urban design non-profit and policy advocacy group. Throughout this project I met different community organizers within Omaha and experimented with different mediums in order to create a compelling conversation around these issues and how they are impacting Omaha in the future. It also was an introduction to gallery installation design and using that as a tool to fully develop a final project.
